How is financial need determined?

Your eligibility depends on your Expected Family Contribution, your year in school, your enrollment status, and the cost of attendance at the school you will be attending. The financial aid office will determine how much financial aid you are eligible to receive.

  • The financial aid staff starts by deciding upon your cost of attendance (COA).
  • They then consider your Expected Family Contribution (EFC).
  • They subtract your EFC from your COA to determine the amount of your financial need and how much need-based aid you can receive.
  • To determine how much non-need-based aid (non-need-based aid does NOT mean scholarships) you can receive, the school takes your cost of attendance and subtracts any financial aid you’ve already been awarded.

Keep in Mind: Financial need is used to determine federal aid, most commonly grants and loans. Aid from sources, such as private scholarship providers, can consider academics, special interests, and other factors, not just income. Even if you don’t meet the criteria for federal aid, make sure to check out the scholarships page.

About Expected Family Contribution (EFC)

Your EFC is an index number the college financial aid staff uses to determine how much financial aid you would receive if you were to attend Brazosport College. The information you report on your financial aid application is used to calculate your EFC.

The EFC is calculated according to a formula established by law. Your family's taxed and untaxed income, assets, and benefits (such as unemployment or Social Security) all could be considered in the formula. Also considered are your family size and the number of family members who will attend college or career school during the year.

Verification

What does it mean to be selected for Verification?

Brazosport College is federally obligated to verify all financial aid applicants that have been selected by the U.S. Department of Education for a process called verification. We can also select students for the verification process if we feel additional information is needed when reviewing your FAFSA application and determining your eligibility for financial aid.

We're required to complete this process prior to certifying student loans or disbursing financial aid funds to a student’s account. Failure to complete the verification process may result in the cancellation of financial aid.

Am I required to respond to a Verification request?

Yes. The U.S. Department of Education requires that you comply with our requests for official documents. Failure to submit all the requested information within the designated time frame may result in the cancellation of your financial aid. Brazosport College is required to complete Verification prior to certifying student loans and disbursing federal aid. Furthermore, failure to turn in necessary documentation could result in you being dropped for non-payment.

What do I need to do if I am selected for Verification?

There are different types of verification, and you may be selected for federal and/or institutional verification. You may also be asked to complete enrollment verification for certain types of financial aid that you may be eligible for.

The type of verification you are selected for determines the forms and documents that you will need to submit to Brazosport College to complete the verification process.

If you are selected for verification, the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office will contact you directly to request specific information, document(s), or form(s) to complete the verification process. This is why it is vital you check MyBC and your Brazosport College email often for updates on your financial aid application.

You should only submit forms or documents specifically requested by the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office.

If you have questions, you can visit us on campus, email us at finaid@brazosport.edu, or call (979) 230-3377.

Why do I need to give you this information? Isn't it on the FAFSA?

The purpose of verification is to allow Brazosport College to verify the information you reported on your FAFSA to ensure its accuracy.

If any information needs to be updated or corrected, we will make those corrections and submit them to the Department of Education for processing on your behalf. Everyone who signs the FAFSA agrees to provide information in the event you are selected to check the accuracy of your completed FAFSA.
