Jazz Band, Jazz Singers to hold concert Oct. 25

Fri Oct 18, 2013

The Brazosport College Jazz Band and Jazz Singers will present a Fall Jazz Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 25 at The Clarion at Brazosport College, 500 College Drive in Lake Jackson.

The concert is free and the public is cordially invited. Both of the college groups recently provided music for the Lake Jackson 70th Anniversary Swing Dance and will reprise a few of those standards from the Swing era songs in this concert.

The Jazz Singers will be featured on the following selections:

It Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t Got That Sing, Sing, Sing: A swinging medley combining Benny Goodman’s Sing, Sing, Sing with Duke Ellington’s It Don’t Mean a Thing.

Chattanooga Choo Choo: Glen Miller’s classic from the big band era.

At Last: Etta James’ classic ballad.

God Bless the Child: Blood, Sweat & Tears’ hit version from 1969.

Selections by the Jazz Band will include the following:

In a Mellow Tone: A toe tapper from Count Basie’s library.

Gertrude’s Bounce: Burnin’ bebop from trumpet legend Clifford Brown.

Filthy McNasty: A hard bop favorite from NEA Jazz Master Horace Silver.

Mambo #8: A spicy mambo from the “King of the Mambo”, Pérez Prado.
