Dr. Ramon Resa to speak at Brazosport College commencement ceremonies
Brazosport College is pleased to welcome pediatrician and inspirational speaker Dr. Ramon Resa as its 2017-18 Spring Commencement speaker.
Brazosport College’s Spring Commencement is scheduled for Saturday, May 12 at the Dow Academic Center. Two commencement ceremonies will be held, the first at 10 a.m. followed by another ceremony at 2 p.m.
The 10 a.m. commencement is for Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Science (AS) and Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) graduates, while the 2 p.m. commencement will be for Bachelor of Applied Technology (BAT), Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and Associate of Applied Science (AAS) graduates.
This year’s speaker, Dr. Resa, defied the odds by leaving a world of poverty, neglect, abuse and total disregard for education to become a successful pediatrician, author and inspiration to everyone he meets.
Dr. Resa was raised by his grandparents as one of 15 children in the tiny community of Goshen, Calif., and, as a child, never imagined becoming a doctor. He was put to work at age 3 picking cotton, oranges and grapes, and struggled with low self-esteem, a speech impediment, recurring depression and prejudice.
While in grade school, however, a teacher opened his eyes to the idea of going to college and becoming a doctor. After years of persistence and hard work, Dr. Resa achieved his goal of earning a medical education. He then opened his pediatric practice in Porterville, Calif., where he has spent three decades working with poor and underserved children, like the child he was.
Through Dr. Resa's public appearances, his keynote speeches, his blogs and his book, he has educated and inspired parents, students, educators, medical professionals and business groups across the country to keep hopes and dreams alive, even when there is no visible evidence that our dreams can come true.
Dr. Resa will speak at both Brazosport College Commencement ceremonies.
