Fast-track Anatomy class 2019

Brazosport College professor Jerry James’ Anatomy and Physiology 1 Fast Track recorded a 92 average in the spring 2019 semester. Students in the class were, front from left, Tammy Jones, Katy Soirez, Katherine Frederick, Angela Anderson, Yuli Leal, SI Leader Tanith Perkins; back, Kimberly Jo Wilt, Sarah Manns, Courtney Stewart, Ashlee Keith, Courtney Reaves, Yajaira Guadarrama, Melissa Castillo and professor Jerry James.

Since Brazosport College began offering Human Anatomy and Physiology in a fast-track format, the class’ average grades have usually ranged from the mid-70s to the low 80s. Occasionally, a class would stand out from the rest, such as the 2015 group that averaged an 87 grade or the 2016 class that upped the bar with an 88 average, but none had ever reached a 90 average.

That was, until this year’s class not only reached a 90 average, but also surpassed it.

Taught by BC professor Jerry James, this year’s spring Anatomy and Physiology 1 Fast-Track class posted a staggering 92 average, by far the highest class average since the course has been offered

“They really poured themselves into their learning, refused to let anybody slack off, and benefited by participating in SI sessions led by former A&P student Tanith Perkins’ James said. "With tenacity like this and a teamwork mindset, every one of these students is going to be successful in their academics, in their careers and in life. I'm going to miss them."

Brazosport College began offering Human Anatomy and Physiology in the fast-track format in 2013. In the fast-track format, students attend lecture four times a week rather than two, and lab two times a week rather than one. They are basically completing the full course in one half of a semester, thus allowing them better continuity as they transition from A&P 1 to A&P 2 in the same semester.

While that may seem intimidating, student scores and student success have been higher in the fast-track format since it began. Because of the intense pace, students quickly realize that procrastination isn't an option. As soon as lecture or lab is over they go right into an SI session or a study group. Students bond together quickly and rely on SI sessions and study groups to help each other be successful.

"The fast-track format is certainly not for the faint of heart." James said. “These students are basically signing up to take a course at double the normal speed, and I guarantee you it is the full course. Nothing is omitted and no corners are cut. It's the full lecture, it's the full lab.”

Students in the record-setting class were Tammy Jones, Katy Soirez, Katherine Frederick, Angela Anderson, Yuli Leal, Kimberly Jo Wilt, Sarah Manns, Courtney Stewart, Ashlee Keith, Courtney Reaves, Yajaira Guadarrama, Melissa Castillo and SI Leader Perkins.
