Tue Feb 12, 2019

The Brazosport College Department of Music will present a President’s Day concert featuring the College & Community Band at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18. The band will be under the direction of Richard Birk.

The performance is free and will be held in The Clarion at Brazosport College at 500 College Drive, Lake Jackson.

“Our program will include patriotic marches, a medley of American folks songs, tributes to both Lincoln and Washington, and a medley of George Gershwin hits,” Birk said. “I hope the community will come join us as we celebrate President’s Day with a variety of great American music.”

Selections scheduled to be performed on Feb. 18 include:

“The Star Spangled Banner”

“An American Fanfare” – a brilliant fanfare by Rick Kirby based on “My Country, Tis of Thee”

“George Washington Bicentennial March” – John Philip Sousa’s classic march

“A Lincoln Celebration” – a collection of three of Abraham Lincoln’s favorite songs, “Oh, Suzannah!,” “Nobody Knows the Trouble I See,” and “Columbia, Gem of the Ocean”

“Fantasy on “Yankee Doodle” – an inventive treatment by Mark Williams of one of America’s most famous early songs

“Gershwin by George!” – a medley of three of George Gershwin’s famous pieces including “Strike Up the Band!,” “I Got Rhythm,” and “Rhapsody in Blue”

“Americans We March” – one of Henry Fillmore’s best-loved marches simply dedicated “To All of Us”
