Mon Oct 17, 2016

American music will be highlighted by the Brazosport Choral Union in a program titled “Americana.”

The concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 22 in the performance hall of The Clarion at Brazosport College.

Folk songs, spirituals and music by American composers, including Stephen Foster, Rhonda Sandberg, Daniel Pinkham, Rene Clausen and William Billings will be featured by the Brazosport College Chamber Choir, College Singers, Jazz Singers and Brazosport Civic Chorus.

Members of the choirs will be offering short solo and small group selections of several of Foster’s timeless tunes from the 1849-1864 era, 1950’s pop and the spiritual “Steal Away.”

Combined as the Brazosport Choral Union the choirs will perform Sandberg’s “Hallelujah;” William Billings’ round, “When Jesus Wept;” Clausen’s beautiful arrangement of the folk song, “The Water is Wide,” with additional clarinet, horn and cello instrumental accompaniment; Daniel Pinkham’s “Wedding Cantata;” and the spiritual “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho.”

Rodney Mason, Director of Choral and Keyboard Activities at Brazosport College, serves as director with Dawn Grimes as piano accompanist. The concert is admission free and open to the community.
