BC writing tutors selected to participate in national conference
Brazosport College writing consultants Jami Jinkins, Tabatha Rhodes and Milton DeLeon, and BC Writing director April Julier, were recently selected to participate in the upcoming National Conference for Peer Tutoring in Writing at the South Padre Island Convention Center. A group of Brazosport College writing consultants were recently selected to give a presentation at the upcoming National Conference for Peer Tutoring in Writing.
Three BC tutors — Milton DeLeon, Jami Jinkins and Tabatha Rhodes — will join BC Writing Center Director April Julier for the presentation, which will be held at the South Padre Island Convention Center on South Padre Island from Nov. 2-4.
The group’s presentation, “Using Online and Face-to-Face Training to Create Controlled Chaos in Tutor Education,” focuses on the use of role-play scenarios and current theories to show how tutor training represents the most valued practices in writing centers. Their presentation is scheduled for the morning of Nov. 4.
“This is a big honor,” Julier said of the selection. “It’s an honor just to apply, but it’s a huge honor to actually get selected.”
The preparation of the proposal was a long process, with months devoted to research, creation, submission, feedback, re-submission and selection, Julier said.
While DeLeon, Jinkins, Rhodes and Julier will participate in the actual presentation, four additional BC writing consultants — Andrea Aguire, Kaylla Luera, Abi McCuistion and Kayla Smith — will also attend the conference.
“This conference is rarely in Texas, so this is a big opportunity for our tutors,” Julier said. “This provides them the opportunity to meet and share best practices with other writing center professionals right here in our backyard.”
The National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing (NCPTW) promotes the teaching of writing through collaborative learning. The annual NCPTW conference offers peer tutors the opportunity to contribute in professional and scholarly ways to the larger writing center community by sharing and presenting researching at national and international conferences.
This year’s conference is hosted by The Writing Center at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
