BC to celebrate Black History Month throughout February
Brazosport College will celebrate Black History Month throughout the month of February with a variety of events that celebrate the innovation and legacy of African Americans throughout the world.
The busy month begins with a kickoff tailgate party on Feb. 3 and will conclude with a luncheon featuring guest speaker Dr. Alveda Williams of The Dow Chemical Company. Also highlighting the month’s activities are a talent and variety show on Feb. 11 and a documentary screening that explores the history of the Greenwood Massacre of 1921 on Feb. 19.
Other events include a Gallery Walk, a mobile Black History Museum, an MLK poster award ceremony, and a discussion with BC instructors David Sysma and Chad Lower.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 3
Black Inventor’s Gallery Walk
10:30 a.m.- 1 p.m. outside the Seidule Theatre
Visit a gallery of posters celebrating African American inventors and their contributions to the U.S. and the world.
Black History Month Kickoff Tailgate Party
11 a.m.- 1 p.m. outside BC Central
Celebrate the kickoff of Black History Month with a tailgate party featuring a DJ, food trucks, games and drum lines. Free vouchers will be available for the first 100 students.
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5
Lunch and Learn: Pre-1800’s
12:30 p.m. at the BC Library
Learn about the African American experience pre-1800’s, featuring Chad Lower and David Sysma. Lunch will be provided.
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 11
Showtime at the Clarion
6:30 p.m. at the Clarion
A talent and variety show to celebrate the contributions of African American performers, musicians and writers.
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 19
“The Rise & Fall of Black Wall Street”
4 p.m. at Gator Hall, BC Central
Explore the history of the Greenwood Massacre of 1921 through a featured display, documentary and discussion.
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20
MLK Poster Award Ceremony
6:30 p.m. at Gator Hall, BC Central
Local youth display and receive recognition for their artistic posters on the life and legacy of Dr. King.
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 24
Mobile Black History Museum
12:30 - 7 p.m. at BC Library, BC Central
Discover more than 150 artifacts from over 40 years of hip hop history and culture. Presentation at 6 p.m. by Sha Rock, the first female MC.
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25
Mobile Black History Museum
10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at BC Library, BC Central
Discover more than 150 artifacts from over 40 years of hip hop history and culture. Presentation at 12:30 p.m.
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 27
Black History Month Luncheon
11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Gator Hall, BC Central
Join us for a celebratory lunch and appearance by guest speaker Dr. Alveda Williams of The Dow Chemical Company. Must present ticket to attend. Tickets available in the Office of Student Life and the Employee Development Center.
