BC Jazz Band, Singers to perform Feb. 27 at the Clarion

The Brazosport College Department of Music will present a free jazz concert featuring the BC Jazz Band & Jazz Singers on Thursday, February 27 at The Clarion at Brazosport College. The jazz band and jazz singers will be under the direction of Richard Birk and John Calderon.

“Our program will include everything from early New Orleans jazz to new music for big band, as well as Motown classics,” Birk said. “I hope the community will come join us as we celebrate the wide diversity of America’s great art form, jazz.”

Selections to be performed by the BC Jazz Band on Feb. 27 include:

“St. James Infirmary” – Early traditional New Orleans jazz

“Cotton Tail”  - A big band classic by Duke Ellington

“La Fiesta” – Chick Corea’s fiery latin original

“Moanin’” – Adventurous driving swing by jazz bassist Charles Mingus

“Two Seconds to Midnight” – Energetic fusion by noted composer and jazz educator Alan Baylock

“Mofongo de Mama” – Infectious mambo by New York-based trumpeter Michael Philip Mossman

“Dial Up” – Wicked contemporary funk by guitarist Cory Wong

Selections to be performed by the BC Jazz Singers include:

“Isn’t She Lovely” – Stevie Wonder’s megahit from his album “Songs in the Key of Life”

“Three Little Birds” – Reggae classic by Bob Marley

“Sweet Georgia Brown” – Swinging a capella version of this jazz standard

“Don’t You Worry ’Bout a Thing” – Motown classic by Stevie Wonder
