BC Jazz Band & Jazz Singers to present Spring concert

Jazz Band at Career Fair

The Brazosport College Jazz Band and Jazz Singers will present a Spring Jazz Concert on at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 4 at The Clarion at Brazosport College.

The concert is free, and the public is cordially invited.

Selections by the Jazz Band will include:

“Ritz Bitz” — an original by BC Jazz Band director Richard Birk

“Down for the Count” and “The Joint” — two funky originals by smooth jazz saxophonist Mindi Adair

“Don’t Get Sassy” — a big band classic by the legendary Thad Jones

“Tenor Madness” — Sonny Rollins’ up-tempo jazz blues

“Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” — Charles Mingus’ haunting ballad honoring Lester Young

“Moliendo Café” — salsa version of the popular Venezuelan song from the early 1960s

“The Chicken” — Pee Wee Ellis’ funk classic based on Jaco Pastorius’ blazing version

The Jazz Singers will be featured on the following selections:

“A Sunday Kind of Love” — Kirby Shaw’s arrangement of Louis Prima’s standard

“Body and Soul” — a beautiful 1930 jazz ballad

“Taylor, the Latte Boy” — a clever song about a Starbucks barista’s experiences that was recorded in 2005 by Kristin Chenoweth

“I’m Beginning to See the Light” — Michele Weir’s updated setting of Duke Ellington’s classic

“Cole Porter Jazz Trio” — a medley of 3 Cole Porter standards: “You Do Something to Me,” “Night and Day,” “Just One of Those Things”

“Minnie the Moocher” — Cab Calloway’s hit from the Blues Brother movie
