The Brazosport College Jazz Band and Jazz Singers will present a jazz concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 27 at The Clarion at Brazosport College. The concert is free, and the public is cordially invited.

“We will be showcasing the broad range of jazz by including everything from some early New Orleans Dixieland to Sinatra classics to some contemporary jazz settings of popular hits,” said BC Jazz Band director Richard Birk. “We hope folks will come out and help us celebrate the great American art form of jazz.”

Selections to be performed include the following from the BC Jazz Band:

“Tiger of San Pedro” — a lively Latin tune originally performed by Bill Watrous’ Manhattan Wildlife Refuge

“Summertime” — George Gershwin’s jazz standard from “Porgy and Bess”

“Use Me” — a funky setting of Bill Withers’ 1972 hit

“Linus and Lucy” — jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi’s most famous song from the Peanuts television specials

“Whoopin’ Blues” — a rollicking blues from New Orleans’ trumpeter Leroy Jones

“Little Sunflower” — a beautiful bossa nova from jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard

“NOLA Medley” — a medley of New Orleans classics, including “Little Liza Jane,” “Second Line” and “When the Saints Go Marching In”

“Comin’ Home Baby” — Bob Dorough’s jazz classic from the early 1960s

“Saint James Infirmary” — a bluesy setting of this 1929 Dixieland standard by Joe Primrose

Selections from the Jazz Singers will include:

“Theme from New York, New York” — a jazz choir setting of one of Frank Sinatra’s biggest hits

“Silence of Time” — a gorgeous a capella ballad by the New York Voices

“Pure Imagination” — a sweet setting of this song from “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”

“I’ll Be Seeing You” — a capella setting of this jazz standard arranged by New York Voices’ Darmon Meader
