Community Education offering free GED/HSE, ESL classes
Brazosport College’s Community Education program is currently registering for its GED/High School Equivalency (HSE), English as a Second Language (ESL) and Citizenship classes.
HSE classes were formerly known as GED classes. The state approved other high school equivalency tests besides the GED. Students can currently chose between the GED and HiSET tests.
The HSE, ESL and Citizenship classes are free and are offered at three different locations around Brazoria County.
HSE and ESL Classes are being offered at the BC Main Campus, the Freeport Historical Museum and at the new Angleton location, 300 S. Walker (the current CATS Academy). The fall 2018 Citizenship class is on Monday and Wednesday evenings at the Brazosport College Main Campus.
“We have different locations in order to provide more options for our community,” said Grant Project Manager Gracie Pequeño. “We want our community to have accessibility to our classes and empower them to reach their fullest potential in life.”
Taking HSE and ESL classes through Brazosport College is simple. Not only are the courses now offered at locations throughout southern Brazoria County, they also remain free of charge. The college’s Citizenship Class are also free.
Registration is ongoing and classes begin Aug. 20. One can register in person at the Community Education Center, Room B-100 on the Brazosport College main campus.
There are no late registrations for the HSE classes and attendance at the first two class meetings is required. If under 19 years of age, a parent or guardian is required to register for HSE classes. HSE classes do require a textbook and calculator, which are approximately $50.
ESL classes are open to anyone 19 years of age or older, and many of the instructors speak multiple languages. The ESL courses have six levels of progression, beginning with no experience in the English language. Attendance at orientation sessions for ESL/Citizenship is mandatory.
Addresses for the class locations are:
— Brazosport College Main Campus: 500 College Dr., Room B-100
— Angleton CATS Academy: 300 S. Walker St.
— Freeport Historical Museum: 305 E. Park Ave.
For more information, call the Community Education Center on the BC Main Campus at (979) 230-3600.
Orientation sessions are also required for all HSE and ESL/Citizenship students. ESL/Citizenship students need to attend one three-hour session, while HSE students must attend a three-day session, totaling nine hours. Orientation sessions are offered through August 23. Contact the BC Community Education Center for orientation times and days.
