BC Community Band to perform April 28 at the Clarion
The Brazosport College Department of Music will present a spring concert featuring the College and Community Band at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 28. The performance is free and will be held in The Clarion at Brazosport College.
The band will be under the direction of Richard Birk.
“This concert will include a wide range of music, ranging from Beethoven to Hollywood and Spanish paso doble marches to circus galops, as well as American folk songs and a classic from the Big Band era,” Birk said. “We think there will be something for everyone and it should be big fun for all. We hope the community will come join us for a great afternoon of music.”
Selections to be performed by the Community Band on April 28 include:
“Aguero” – a Spanish paso doble by José Franco
“Adagio Cantabile” – the gorgeous second movement of Beethoven’s “Pathétique Piano Sonata” adapted for concert band
“Dragonslayer” – an original march by community band member George St. George.
“Songs of Old Kentucky” - a medley of folk songs, including “John Riley,” “Wayfaring Stranger,” “Sourwood Mountain,” “Frog Went-a-Courting,” and “Loving Hannah”
“El Camino Real” – a Latin fantasy by Alfred Reed based on flamenco chord progressions and the jota and fandango dances
“Lawrence of Arabia” – themes from the epic film that won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1963
“Red River Station” – penned in 2017 by Jeremy Bell, this is a musical depiction of the stop along the Chisholm Trail where herders would gather before crossing the treacherous Red River
“Harlem Nocturne” – a classic from the Big Band Era that will feature 3-year Texas Community College All-State alto saxophonist Alec Benitez
“Eclipse Galop” - a rousing circus galop by Karl King
