BC and Community Band, Houston Brass Band highlight concert

Wed Apr 8, 2015

The Brazosport College Department of Music will present a “Doubleheader Band Concert” on Sunday, April 12 at The Clarion at Brazosport College.

The free concert will feature the Brazosport College and Community Band, under the direction of Richard Birk, and the Houston Brass Band, under the direction of Robert Walp. The concert begins with the College and Community Band at 2:30 p.m., followed by the Houston Brass Band taking the stage at 4:00 p.m.

“This concert will include music from various countries, Spain to England to America, spanning a wide variety of styles from baroque to vaudeville, and composers ranging from Handel to Grainger to Gershwin,” Birk said. “We think there will be something for everyone and it should be great fun for all. We hope the community will come out for a great afternoon of music.”

Selections scheduled to be performed by the Community Band on April 12 include:

“Instinct” — a thrilling concert opener by ASCAP award-winning composer Larry Clark

“Passacaglia” — the last movement in George Frideric Handel’s “Suite No. 7 in G minor” and originally written for harpsichord and published in 1720

“Prelude No. 2” — a lush band setting of George Gershwins famous piano prelude

“Danse Carnivale” — a new piece that composer Randall D. Standridge says “was inspired by the many great can-cans, gallops and quick-steps that populate the music repertoire.”

“El Gato Montés” — a rousing Spanish march from this 1916 opera by Manuel Penella

“Colonial Song” — an original folk song written in 1911 by noted band composer Percy Grainger

“Platte River Hoedown” — a 2014 composition by Carl Strommen based on an energetic Western American dance form

“Curtain Call” — a fun closer by Dallas-based composer John Wasson that is modeled on music from the vaudeville stage

The Houston Brass Band’s repertoire includes a march and a polka, as well as arrangements of classical compositions. Selections to be performed by the Houston Brass Band include the following:
