Matthew Brown-1

Matthew Brown has always enjoyed a good challenge.

Whether it was being ranked near the top of his class at Sweeny High School or playing a leadership role as a percussionist in the school band, Matthew has always prided himself on going above and beyond the norm.

Recently, he added one more huge accomplishment to his list of achievements, as he earned an Associate of Science degree from Brazosport College. Even more impressive, he completed his degree a couple of weeks before he graduated high school.

On the surface, earning a college degree and a high school diploma might seem like an impossible goal, but it’s definitely achievable through dual credit classes at Brazosport College.

Matthew discovered this possibility while watching his older sister, Molly, take dual credit classes at BC a few years earlier.

“My sister graduated from BC in 2016, one semester after she graduated from high school,” he said. “She was only a couple of classes away from her associate degree at graduation, so I believed it could probably be done.

“I decided to give it a try and all the pieces fit together for me,” he added. “In fact, it was strange how well it worked. It was destined to happen for me.”

Similar to other students across the nation, Matthew’s final semester included finishing up his schooling online because of the COVID-19 pandemic. While it might seem intimidating to some, Matthew didn’t have issues with taking classes in an online format. In fact, his enjoys them.

“I’ve done 62 hours of college and all but four or five of those classes have been online,” he said. “Honestly, I like online classes because you can work at your own pace. I see myself taking more online classes in the future.”

Matthew is also quick to encourage others to sign up for online classes. The upcoming Fall semester at Brazosport College will provide a good chance for this, as classes will either be partially or fully online.

“For those who haven’t had online classes, this is a great opportunity to find out if you like online classes,” he said. “You never know, but you might even like them better than regular classes. This is just a good opportunity to learn more about your personal learning style.”

Although Matthew is heading to San Antonio in the fall to attend the University of Incarnate Word, he’ll always have fond memories of his time — both online and in person — at Brazosport College .

“I didn’t really know what I was expecting when I first enrolled, but my mind was blown,” Matthew said. “Everyone was so nice, welcoming and helpful. It made everything less stressful. The people at BC are so willing to help and they want you to do well. They went out of their way to help me.”

Most importantly, however, Matthew believes his experience at Brazosport College has helped prepare him for the future and the many challenges ahead.

“I don’t know if I feel like I have something to prove or if it’s that I strive to achieve excellence, but there’s something within me that compels me to do more,” he said. “I feel this need to do extraordinary things and Brazosport College has helped me do that.”
