Brazosport College to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with online events

Brazosport College is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of events, beginning Sept. 17 and running through Oct. 15.

The theme of this year’s festivities is “Adelante,” and all events will be held virtually through Zoom. From cooking demonstrations to panel discussions to dance classes, an abundance of fun events and activities are scheduled that will appeal to all tastes.

Below is a full list of Brazosport College’s 2020 Hispanic Heritage Month activities:

COOKING DEMO: GREEN CHICKEN POZOLE
Thursday, Sept. 17 – 12:30 p.m.
Join Chef Erica Gonzalez to create the Mexican dish, Green Chicken Pozole. Ingredients can be picked up from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at the Sadler Building overhang on campus.

PANEL: ADVANCEMENT OF MEXICAN AMERICANS
Tuesday, Sept. 22 – 12:30 p.m.
The Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans will discuss resources available to students and community members.

DIY SUGAR SKULLS WITH ARTIST ANGEL LUNA
Thursday, Sept. 24 – 4 p.m.
Ceramic artist Angel Luna will walk those in attendance through a demonstration of making sugar skull masks. Supplies will be mailed directly to one’s door.

VIRTUAL ART GALLERY TOUR WITH ANGEL LUNA
Tuesday, Sept. 29 – 4 p.m.
Participate in a live, virtual tour of the Brazosport College Art Gallery, displaying the works of ceramic artist Angel Luna.

PANEL: HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Wednesday, Sept. 30 – 4 p.m.
Local business owners and entrepreneurs will discuss aspects of their business and connections to the Hispanic community.

COOKING DEMO: BREAKFAST PUPUSAS Y AL DESAYUNO
Thursday, Oct. 1 – 9 a.m.
For Central America Week, join Chef Daniela Ocampo for a breakfast cooking demonstration. Ingredients can be picked up from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the Sadler Building overhang on campus.

PANEL: LATINX IN STEM
Tuesday, Oct. 6 – 12:30 p.m.
Prominent Latinx panelists in STEM will focus on inspiring and empowering the future generation of Hispanic leaders in STEM.

SALSA DANCE CLASS WITH CHRIS WILLIAMS
Wednesday, Oct. 7 – 12:30 p.m.
Join Chris Williams in a live, interactive Zoom dance class and learn to salsa. No partner required. All skill levels are welcome.

PANEL: HEALTH CARE & MENTAL HEALTH
Wednesday, Oct. 14 – 4 p.m.
A discussion of mental health as it relates to the Hispanic community, including stigmas, treatment and issues related to the current pandemic.

COOKING DEMO: ALMOJÁBANA Y CHOCOLATE
Thursday, Oct. 15 – 12:30 p.m.
Chef Daniela Ocampo will walk participants through the Colombian dish, almojábanas, to enjoy with hot chocolate. Ingredients can be picked up from 4 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 14 at the Sadler Building overhang.
