BC Jazz Band, Jazz Singers set for Spring concert on April 23 at the Clarion

The Brazosport College Jazz Band and Jazz Singers will celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month with its Spring Jazz Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 23 at The Clarion at Brazosport College.

The Jazz Band will be directed by Richard Birk and John Calderon. The Jazz Singers will be under the direction of Ben May and Calderon.

The performance is free to the public.

Selections scheduled to be performed are: 

Stolen Moments” Oliver Nelson’s cool jazz blues.

“Harlem Nocturne”  An updated contemporary arrangement by Mike Tomaro of this big band classic. 

Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” Maceo Parker’s funky New Orleans brass band version of this jazz standard.

Lament — A gorgeous ballad penned by legendary trombonist J.J. Johnson.

Red-Light Green-Light”  — A modern swing piece by University of Wyoming jazz educator Ben Marley.

Strut” A funky bass trombone feature by Rick Hirsch, in the style of James Brown.

Take It In Stride” — A medium swing selection in the stride piano style.

Muy Caliente” A hot samba by Erik Sherburne.

Steampunk”  — Heavy metal jazz — by Erik Morales.

Selections performed with the Jazz Singers include:

You Will Be Found” the hit from the Broadway musical “Dear Evan Hansen.”

My Eyes Adored You” Johnny Rivera’s salsa treatment of Frankie Valli’s 1974 hit.

Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen” Benny Goodman’s classic featuring Bernadette Fernandez.

What You Won’t Do For Love” — Bobby Caldwell’s R&B hit featuring Justin Dodson.

The Villain I Appear To Be” — from the film “Diamond Jack” featuring Penelope Majthub.

All Brazosport College health and safety requirements will be in effect, including physical distancing and the wearing of face coverings.
