Homemade pie contest to highlight Pre-Pi Day festivities
Once every year, math enthusiasts honor one of the most revered mathematical constants in the world — the number 3.14, otherwise known as ‘pi’ — with its own day. Celebrated on March 14, Pi Day has become known as a day of fun and festivities, often involving pies.
Every year, Brazosport College joins in on the celebration with a day devoted to pies, presentations and fun. Although Pi Day occurs during Spring Break, BC students will still be able to celebrate the big day in all its glory.
Slated for Thursday, March 7 — the final full day of classes before Spring Break — Brazosport College’s “Pre-Pi Day” will have a number of activities to celebrate the day. The festivities can be found in the BC Student Success Center. The event begins at 9 a.m. and will run through 3 p.m.
One of the day’s most popular events is the homemade pie contest. Pie entrees can be dropped off between 7 and 9 a.m., with judging beginning at 10 a.m. Of course, pie — including moon pies and pie slices — will be served all day.
For those seeking more than pie, a pancake and topping bar will be open from 9 to 11 a.m., followed by pizza at noon. Another highlight will be a Pre-Pi Day presentation by BC math instructor Kevin O’Neill from noon to 1 p.m.
More activities will be featured throughout the day, including math videos, door prizes and drawings. Pre-Pi Day t-shirts will also be available.
Pre-Pi Day is hosted by the Brazosport College Math Center and Office of Student Life. For more information, contact Rebecca Goins at rebecca.goins@brazosport.edu
