The Clarion - Music Performance Center

Brian Casey

The College & Community Band

On Sunday, April 29th at 2:30 p.m. the Brazosport College Department of Music hosts an afternoon concert performance by the College and Community Band under the direction of Brian Casey. The performance will be offered at no cost to the public, and will be held in The Clarion, located just east of the main building at 500 College Drive, Lake Jackson.

Sunday’s concert will feature a diverse mix of very entertaining music. The selections scheduled to be performed on April 29th include:

Ascend – A rousing concert opener with three minutes of sheer energy, by Samuel Hazo.

Prelude, Siciliano and Rondo – This piece by British composer Malcolm Arnold was originally composed for brass bands.  It was adapted for modern concert band by John Paynter, and is now a popular staple of band repertoire.

Horkstow Grange – This beautiful and dramatic piece, based on an English folk melody, is taken from Percy Grainger’s masterwork for band, Lincolnshire Posy.

Canzona Bergamasca – German Baroque composer Samuel Scheidt imitates the Italian dance, the “Bergamasca.”   The performers in the band arrangement have a chance to “wiggle their fingers” at rapid tempos!

Captain of the Host – Our own George St. George does it again!  This rousing 6/8 march features exciting dynamic contrasts and catchy melodies.  Come hear the world premiere of this exciting piece composed by our baritone saxophonist!

Music from “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?”  - The soundtrack from this movie won a 2001 grammy Award for album of the year.  The music is taken from American folk, bluegrass and gospel music.

In addition to the concert on April 29th, The Brazosport College and Community Band will present at free concert on Monday, May 7th at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium at Angleton High School.
