Steve Hunt to perform with BC Jazz Band and Jazz Singers
The Brazosport College Jazz Band and Jazz Singers will perform with guest artist Steve Hunt at The Clarion at Brazosport College at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 26. The concert is free and the public is invited.
Hunt, a jazz pianist, is a graduate of Brazoswood High School and currently on the faculty of the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. He has performed and recorded with jazz greats Allan Holdsworth, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, Freddie Hubbard and Stanley Turrentine.
Hunt has his own recording studio and record label — Spice Rack Records — and has released several CDs as leader of his own groups. He will be featured with both the BC Jazz Band and Jazz Singers.
Selections to be performed include the following from the BC Jazz Band:
“Kid From Red Bank” — a rollicking blues by big band pianist Count Basie
“The Preacher” — gospel jazz by NEA Jazz Master and hard bop pianist Horace Silver
“In Walked Bud” — Tito Puente’s salsa setting of this Thelonius Monk original
“Polkadots and Moonbeams” — a gorgeous ballad setting by saxophonist Bob Mintzer
“La Fiesta” — Chick Corea’s fiery Spanish original
“Blues in the Kitchen” — an up-tempo original blues by pianist Steve Hunt
Selections from the Jazz Singers will include:
“Tangerine” — a light bossa nova version of this jazz standard
“My Country ’Tis of Thee” — a bluesy gospel setting by arranger Kirby Shaw
“Loves Me Like a Rock” — Paul Simon’s hit from the 1970s, as performed by the New York Voices
“You Are So Beautiful” — a tribute to the recently-deceased singer Joe Cocker
