Brazosport College staff members Dr. Isaiah Schauer and Ann Montgomery were recently honored by the college’s students, faculty and staff members as representatives to the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) and the League for Innovation in Community Colleges John & Suanne Roueche Excellence awards.
Montgomery, an administrative office specialist for Communication & Fine Arts, was selected for the staff excellence award, while Schauer, an instructor of Life Sciences, was the recipient of the organization’s teacher excellence award. As the 2014 Teaching Excellence recipient, Schauer also becomes BC’s Piper Professor nominee.
Schauer earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences from Baylor College of Medicine and has been teaching at Brazosport College since 2011. Before coming to Brazosport College, Schauer was a postdoctoral fellow in the department of pathology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
“My goal through teaching is to supplant as much ignorance and non-factual, reactionary, emotionalism as possible by fostering insight, courage and curiosity for the life sciences in the life of every single student I encounter,” Schauer said. “This, I believe, is how a teaching professor can change the world. Being awarded for teaching excellence tells me that I’m making sincere progress toward this goal. ”
As for Montgomery, she began working at Brazosport College in 2004 and has spent all 10 of those years in the communications and fine arts division. Before coming to Brazosport College, she spent 27 years working for the law enforcement division of Texas Parks & Wildlife.
“This is a wonderful atmosphere and I have the best co-workers,” Montgomery said of Brazosport College. “I especially enjoy being around our students. They are uplifting and they help me to be open to new ideas. My goal is to always be available and encouraging to them, because the students are what it’s all about. It truly is an honor to be the recipient of the staff excellence award.”
The NISOD and John & Suanne Roueche Excellence Awards celebrate outstanding contributions and leadership by community college faculty and staff . Each academic year, member colleges are invited to select and submit names of individuals to be recognized as recipients of these prestigious awards.
