BC to offer speech course to assist workforce communication

Thu Oct 16, 2014

If you were asked today to speak before a group of co-workers, customers or venders, would you be ready? Be it saying a few words or making a formal presentation, skills are needed to show you are competent, credible and confident.

To assist in developing these skills, Brazosport College will be offering a new speech class this spring. The class, Business and Professional Communication (Speech 1321), will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday evenings and will focus on workplace communications skills.

Communication skills are often the deciding factor for workplace advancement or, in many instances, being chosen for employment. For example, a recent survey by the University of Pittsburgh’s Business School revealed that recruiters from companies with more than 50,000 employees cited communication skills as the single most important factor in choosing managers.

The course will be taught by Ginni Leathers.

“This class will include developing relationships with co-workers, building teams to making presentations, communication skills, professional-caliber presentations and overcoming obstacles to communication in the electronic age,” Leathers said.
