Delfeayo Marsalis, one of the top trombonists, composers and producers in jazz, will bring his talents to The Clarion at Brazosport College on Nov. 17.

The Delfeayo Marsalis Quintet will take the Clarion stage at 7:30 p.m.

Praised by the “Los Angeles Times” for his “technical excellence, inventive mind and frequent touches of humor,” Marsalis is considered by many as one of the best trombonists of his generation.

In 2011, Delfeayo and the Marsalis family (father Ellis and brothers Branford, Wynton and Jason) earned the nation’s highest jazz honor — a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award.

Delfeayo is an exceptional trombonist who has  toured internationally with five renowned bandleaders. As a bandleader, he has earned wide acclaim for his first three albums as a leader: “Pontius Pilate’s Decision” (1992), “Musashi” (1997) and “Minions Dominion” (2006).

His 2011 release, “Sweet Thunder,” is a modern interpretation of the Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn suite, “Such Sweet Thunder.” Rather than merely recreating the classic work, which is comprised of musical depictions of characters from William Shakespeare’s plays, Delfeayo took the work as a point of departure for his octet, creating fresh and new music inspired by the original suite.

As an added bonus to the performance at the Clarion, the Delfeayo Marsalis Quintet will also be providing educational outreach programs for selected local schools.

The Nov. 17 show featuring the Delfeayo Marsalis Quintet is being sponsored by Olin.

Tickets for the performance are $35 for adults, $30 for seniors and Brazosport College employees, and $10 for students and children.
