Community Education registering for free GED, ESL classes

Brazosport College’s Community Education program is currently registering for its GED and English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. Better yet, the courses are free of charge.

Through Brazosport College’s Community Education program, students can take GED and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes with no tuition charge. Community Education also offers Citizenship classes for free. GED classes do require a GED textbook and calculator, which are $40.

Registration is ongoing through August, with classes starting in early September.

For the GED classes, signing up this semester has a bit more of a sense of urgency than usual because the current test will expire at the end of 2013.

The GED test contains five parts — writing, reading, social studies, science and mathematics — that can be taken separately, but must all be passed in order to receive a high school credential. GED test-takers who have started and completed parts of the GED test, but not finished, have until December 31, 2013 to do so. If not completed by this date, the previous scores will expire and the test-taker will have to start over with the new 2014 GED test.

“This is the final opportunity for people who have started the GED test but have not completed all five portions,” said Brazosport College GED Coordinator Kay Brooks. “With the new changeover, all prior work will be lost once 2014 starts. As a result, this will be the last semester to complete your work.”

The 2014 test will be different from the current version, as it will be computer-based and much more similar to a high school exit exam. The current test is a more traditional pen-and-paper exam. The cost of the test, which is currently $65, is expected to increase to $135 after the changeover.

Brazosport College Community Education offers day and night GED courses, two days each week, at both the BC Main Campus at 500 College Dr. in Lake Jackson and the Freeport CE Center at 211 E. Park Ave. in Freeport. A Pre-GED class focused on limited English speakers is also available at the Freeport CE Center, as well as a Math-only class at the BC Main Campus.

While BC Community Education is gearing up for its new GED classes, it’s also expecting a big turnout for its ESL courses. In fact, a new ESL daytime class has been added this year to expand opportunities for students.

Another ESL instructor has also been added in order to provide more individualized instruction to students.

Day and evening ESL classes will be available at the Freeport CE Center and the BC Main Campus. ESL and GED classes are scheduled for Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday.

ESL classes are open to anyone over 18 years of age, and many of the instructors speak multiple languages. The ESL courses have six levels of progression, beginning with no experience in the English language.

Brazosport College also has a Citizenship Class beginning September 24 at the Freeport CE Center. The Class is from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays through November 19.

For more information call (979) 230-3600 or (979) 230-3597. To register, visit the Lake Jackson main campus location or the Freeport CE center.
