College and Community Band to host spring concert April 14
The Brazosport College Department of Music will present a spring concert featuring the College and Community Band at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 14 at 2:30 p.m. The band will be under the direction of Richard Birk.
The performance is free and will be held in The Clarion, located just east of the main building at 500 College Drive, Lake Jackson.
“Our program will range from classical selections by Verdi & Shostakovich to some brand new pieces for concert band, including the world premiere of a march by our very own community band member, George St. George," Birk said. "We’ll also throw in a medley of Beatles songs, as well as a ragtime piece featuring our percussionists. It should be great fun for all."
Selections scheduled to be performed on April 14 include:
Dies Irae from Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem
Children’s March – a setting by Percy Grainger of the folk song “Over the Hills and Far Away”
Waltz No. 2 from Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Suite for Variety Stage Orchestra"
By Loch and Mountain – a musical journey to Ireland that quotes the traditional Irish folk song “I Know Where I’m Going” and then captures the whirling rhythms of Gaelic dancers in a Highlands celebration
Choreography - an energetic overture by Robert Sheldon that was commissioned by the Association of Texas Small School Bands in 2008
Promised Land – the world premiere of this concert march by community band member, George St. George
Dill Pickles – a catchy ragtime piece featuring the percussion section
The Great Steamboat Race – a musical depiction of the 1870 Mississippi River race between the steamboats the Robert E. Lee and the Natchez
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – a medley of favorites from this classic Beatles album
