CE’s free English as a Second Language courses start Feb. 11

Mon Feb 11, 2013

It’s common knowledge that learning the English language can be difficult. However, Brazosport College can make it easier to get the learning process started. And best of all, the college does it for free.

Brazosport College Community Education’s English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are starting soon, and students of all nationalities and skill levels are welcome. Students can register for classes now. The free courses require six hours of class a week, split among two three-hour days, for 12 weeks.

The classes are taught in a fun and supportive learning environment and are designed to give adults with limited English language skills the opportunity to practice reading, writing and speaking English, while learning about our community, government and culture.

“We’re here for the community and we have a great ESL program,” said Brazosport College EL Civics Coordinator Juana Thomas. “We have excellent teachers who are qualified, enthusiastic and have many years of experience. They’re ready to help.”

The ESL classes are offered in three different locations, including the college’s main campus in Lake Jackson, the Freeport Community Education Center and Clute Intermediate School. Day and night courses are available.

Classes begin the week of February 11.

Also, on Feb. 26, Brazosport College will begin the next session of its Citizen and English Language course.

In this class, which is offered at the Freeport Community Education Center, the college’s knowledgeable instructor assist immigrants in improving their English language skills, understanding residency and citizenship processes, and learning the rights and responsibilities of being citizens.

The class is designed to help students prepare for the naturalization interview.

Just like the ESL classes, the Citizenship course is free.

“I always get excited to see students complete this course,” Thomas said. “After they finish, all they have to do is complete and pass the citizenship test. These small steps equate to big rewards.”
