This season’s lineup of summer matinees includes:
Tom’s Fun Band
Wed., June 19; 1:30 p.m.
What do you get when you cross a passion for music with a guitar, drums and a tuba? Tom’s Fun Band, of course! Tom’s Fun Band is a group of musicians who have come from very different musical backgrounds to bring fun music to children and families. Tom’s Fun Band was born when Tom Wilbeck decided to start writing children’s music for his twins. He was then joined by Will Samson and Chris Wilbeck to form the full Tom’s Fun Band.
Ken Waldman: “Alaskan Fiddler Poet”
Wed, June 26; 1:30 p.m.
Ken Waldman, Alaskan poet, storyteller and fiddler, is a true original. All the way from Anchorage, Ken brings to Texas his poems and stories about life in the Alaskan frontier, which are as adventurous and grand as the Alaskan tundra. Ken accompanies himself with some first-class Appalachian-style old-time fiddling.
Soul Street:“Taking it to the Streets”
Wed., July 10, 1:30 p.m.
They fly through the air with the greatest of ease. They dance en pointe while semi-crouched in high-top sneakers. Catch the excitement of street dance as these energetic performers demonstrate their varied styles and discuss the distinctive features and origins of each dance. From Brazil’s Capoiera to New York’s Break Dance and the multi-component form of hip-hop, the audience learns how these styles developed and evolved.
Jean Kuecher’s Marionette Theatre:“Rumplestiltkin”
Wed., July 17; 1:30 p.m.
The famous fairy tale, “Rumplestiltkin,” by Jean Kuecher’s Marionette Playhouse, will dazzle all ages with beautiful handcrafted marionettes on strings. The spinning wheel changes straw into gold, the Elf snares the Queen’s father and the King’s horse comes to the rescue. The audience will help the Queen learn the name of the Elf. It’s fun for the entire family.
Wed., July 24; 1:30 p.m.
Award-winning children’s recording artist Vincent Nunes presents his humorous, lively songs, including “Jump Rope Rap,” “Double Bubble Bubblebath” and others with educational messages about ABCs, anatomy and counting.
Wed., July 31; 1:30 p.m.
Jamie Shaheen’s catchy, original songs form the basis of the “Everybody’s Happy When They’re Singing” show – a sing-a-long and dance-a-long celebration for kids. A highly interactive performance, Jamie leads the crowd in singing as a solo act or with additional musicians as backup. Audiences can’t resist the urge to join in when Jamie’s effervescent personality and irresistible sense of fun work their magic on them.
C.J. Johnson — Illusionist
Wed., Aug. 7; 1:30 p.m.
For more than 12 years, C.J. Johnson has been entertaining audiences across the nation and on numerous television networks, including Showtime, CBS, Fox and CMT. His kid-friendly, family-friendly show is a blend of side-splitting comedy, mind-bending magic and grand illusion.
