BC to welcome published writer at poetry celebration
Last year’s “Poem In My Pocket Day” was such a success that Brazosport College is set to do it again.
For the second straight year, Brazosport College will celebrate National Poetry Month with a daylong event featuring plenty of food, fun, prizes and poetry.
“Poem in My Pocket Day,” sponsored by BC’s Office of Student Life, Writing Center and the English Department, is slated for Thursday, April 14 at the College’s Student Success Center.
Among the scheduled activities is a Poetry Scavenger Hunt and an opportunity for students to bring a poem to the BC Student Success Center for a chance to win door prizes. Students also can take part in poetry readings, creating their own black-out poetry and enjoying freefood. The highlight of the day, however, is a reading and book signing by published poet Iliana Rocha.
Rocha is originally from Texas and is currently a PhD candidate in English-Creative Writing at Western Michigan University. She earned her MFA in Creative Writing-Poetry from Arizona State University, where she was Poetry Editor for “Hayden’s Ferry Review.”
Her work was chosen for the “Best New Poets 2014” anthology and has previously appeared in “Blackbird,” “Yalobusha Review,” “Puerto del Sol” and “Third Coast.”
Her first book, “Karankawa,” won the 2014 AWP Donald Hall Prize for Poetry and is published by the University of Pittsburgh Press.
“Rocha's poetry uses the setting of her hometown, the Texas Gulf Coast, as a foil to describe and understand life, death, coming-of-age and other universal processes,” said BC Writing Center Director April Julier. “The Brazosport College Writing Center is honored to host a Texas native, and we hope her poetry will resonate with our students and community.”
Activities for “Poem in My Pocket Day” begin at 8 a.m. at the Student Success Center with three hours worth of activities, including poetry videos, black-out poetry, door prizes and more.
The event continues at 11 a.m. with a reading and book signing by Rocha. Mini quesadillas and more door prizes will also be available at this time. Rocha will return for another reading and signing at 4:30 p.m. with more food and prizes up for grabs.
The event ends at 7 p.m.
For an opportunity to win door prizes, remember to show your poems to someone in the Student Success Center and pick up a Poetry Scavenger Hunt Card from the Office of Student Life, the Student Success Center, the BC Library and other support outposts on campus.
