BC to host screening of “Degrees Not Debt”
Brazosport College will host a film and discussion on Thursday, September 18 covering the topic of student debt and helping students navigate potential financial barriers toward earning degrees.
The film, “Degrees Not Debt,” will be at Gator Hall on the Brazosport College campus. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the session runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The film and discussion is being sponsored by the college’s Gaining Achievement Through Organized Reading (GATOR) program, the Faculty Assembly and the Office of Student Life.
According to the National Education Agency, federal student loan debt has topped the one trillion dollar mark and now accounts for more national debt than credit cards, as well as every debt category except home mortgages. More Americans are taking out larger student loans than ever before in our nation's history. The film, “Degrees Not Debt” will help broaden understanding of the causes and consequences of the rising costs of higher education and therefore loans.
Following the screening of a documentary, NEA and BC personnel will share information about a 2007 law providing for relief to approximately 33 of the 40 million Americans with federal student loan debt.
Admission to the event is free and tickets can be reserved athttps://actionnetwork.org/events/Brazosport-college-degrees-not-debt.
