The Multicultural Club at Brazosport College recently introduced students to the holiday, Dia de los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead.
Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and the Catholic world, including Italy, Spain, the Philippines, Central and South America. It’s an opportunity for Latin Americans to remember and pay tribute to their deceased loved ones. The belief is that during the Day of the Dead, spirits return to Earth to be with their families.
The holiday is similar to the American celebration of Halloween, however, it is not morbid or gloomy. Rather, it is a festive remembrance of those who have departed.
At the Brazosport College event, students discussed the holiday, as well as answered questions, enjoyed cupcakes and cookies, and entered a coloring contest.
