BC Jazz Band and Singers to perform on May 2

The Brazosport College Jazz Band and Jazz Singers will perform its Spring Jazz Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 2 at The Clarion at Brazosport College. The concert is free, and the public is cordially invited.
 
The BC Jazz Band recently participated in the Gulf Coast Intercollegiate Conference Jazz Festival where three group members received special recognition. Chris Cermak, trumpet, and Rolando Rivera, guitar, received Outstanding Performance Awards and Jonathan Peachey, bass. was named the Outstanding Soloist for the entire festival.
 
Selections by the Jazz Band will include the following:
 
Lotus Blossom – a bright up-tempo swing tune by Texas trumpeter Kenny Dorham
 
The Pebble Beach Theme – a light samba written for the Peanuts TV specials by pianist Vince Guaraldi
 
Impressions – burning modal jazz by legendary saxophonist John Coltrane
 
Darius Dance – mysterious contemporary swing by jazz pianist Marc Copland
 
Back at the Chicken Shack – a blues romp by jazz organist Jimmy Smith
 
Steppin’ – funky jazz by the modern organ trio Soulive
 
The Jazz Singers will be featured on the following selections:
 
Satin Doll – Duke Ellington’s classic from the big band era
 
Chili Con Carne – spicy a capella Latin jazz piece by the Swedish vocal jazz ensemble the Real Group
 
For All We Know – a gorgeous setting written for the New York Voices of this timeless jazz ballad
 
The Longest Time – Billy Joel’s doo wop hit from the 80s
