BC student places at ABC Craft Championships
Brazosport College student Ashley Agbe recently earned a silver medal at one of the construction industry’s most recognized and revered craft skills events, the Associated Builders and Contractors’ (ABC) National Craft Championships.
Agbe, a 2007 Brazoswood High School graduate, brought home second-place honors in the millwright division. She was representing her employer, RPM Services, Inc., as well as ABC Texas Gulf Coast and Brazosport College.
Of the 161 total participants in 13 different crafts, Agbe was one of only four female competitors. She was the only woman to place in the medals. Her division had eight competitors.
ABC Texas Gulf Coast Chapter has sponsored competitors in this national competition since 1996 and has a total of 18 medals. Brazosport College’s millwright program, which is taught by Jim Slick and is one of the craft training programs sponsored by ABC, has produced 13 medal winners since first sending a competitor to the National Craft Championships in 1997.
Also on hand at the National Craft Championships was local ABC Member and MSTI Board Member Al Olvera, operations manager and partner at Marquis Construction Services in Clute. Olvera volunteered his time and expertise as a judge for this year’s competition.
The event had a record 161 competitors in 13 crafts, including Electrical: Commercial-Industrial; Electrical: Residential-Commercial; Carpentry: Residential-Commercial; Fire Sprinkler; HVAC; Instrumentation Fitting; Insulation; Millwright; Pipefitting; Plumbing; Sheet Metal; Pipe Welding; and Structural Welding.
