Brazosport College celebrates ‘Accelerate TEXAS Week’
Brazosport College is one of more than 21 community colleges across the state celebrating Accelerate TEXAS Week in honor of the initiative that has already helped more than 5,000 Adult Basic Education (ABE) students on their way toward college credentials.
As part of Accelerate TEXAS Week, Brazosport College will be featuring its Jumpstart program from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Nov. 12. A public information display will be set up in the main campus lobby, with program and questionnaire flyers, career information and other helpful handouts for students without GEDs that are interested in joining the Jumpstart program next semester.
Hosted by Brazosport College, the Jumpstart program provides marketable skills to participants who want to be hired as entry-level pipefitters with local industry. Graduates will have earned multiple industry-recognized certificates that are portable and stackable. Grant funding is available for eligible students.
Accelerate TEXAS addresses a critical workforce issue: At least 60 percent of Texas jobs will require a career certificate or college degree by 2020, according to the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. In addition, an estimated 40 percent of Texans over age 25 have never been to college, let alone earned a credential.
Accelerate TEXAS programs integrate ABE skills into college pathways so that students gain all the skills and certificates they need to apply for high-demand jobs. The colleges use real-time labor market data and other information to determine what credentials hold the most value for students. Most Accelerate TEXAS students are pursuing credentials in health care, manufacturing, construction, and transportation.
