Who decides where and when I can carry my handgun?

The College has charged a Campus Carry Task Force with the responsibility to develop a campus carry policy that is compliant with Senate Bill 11, addresses the safety and welfare of students and the campus community, and that is based upon input obtained from campus constituents.

The Task Force is comprised of representatives from faculty, staff, administration and a Brazosport College student.

Brazosport College will decide as a community what is appropriate for its campus, subject to approval from the Board of Regents.

How will the College determine which areas to allow weapons?

The Task Force will consider many factors in making recommendations as to where concealed weapons will be allowed on campus, including the size, purpose, and safety concerns related to each college-owned building and facility.  In addition, the Task Force will take into account the student body population and the uniqueness of the campus environment as well as comments to a survey made available to the College community.  There must be a reasonable justification for each location restricting concealed carry.

What is the timeframe for developing the policy?

The Task Force has the goal of completing an initial draft of the policy by end of the Spring 2016 semester.  The initial draft will be submitted to the College President for input. The Task Force plans to seek approval from the Board of Regents before the approved policy must be in effect beginning August 1, 2017.

Can I provide suggestions and comments regarding the policy?

The College welcomes the input of faculty, staff, students, its stakeholders and the surrounding communities.  An online survey will be available to receive your comments and the College will hold a public forum in the coming months.

Will guns be allowed in classrooms?

Texas Law prohibits CHL holders from intentionally or knowingly displaying a handgun in plain view of another person in the buildings of an institution of higher education, or in driveways, streets, sidewalks or walkways, parking lots, parking garages, or other parking areas. If you see an intentionally displayed handgun in these areas, please contact campus security at 979-230-3207. However, it is very possible that you will see an accidentally displayed handgun on campus. Accidental exposure is not a violation of the law. Please contact campus security if the individual seems to be intentionally or knowingly displaying the handgun in the areas listed.
